History and use

Ribston originated in England from Ribston Hall, Yorkshire. The variety is also known under the synonyms Ribston Pippin. Ribston is a seed plant formed in 1707. The variety is cultivated or has been cultivated. Ribston is or has been suitable for cultivation in shops / gardens. The apple is primarily an eating apple.

The tree

The tree has a medium wide growth. In the years 1997 and 1999, Ribston was assessed under unsprayed conditions in southern Germany. Ribston got no scab on the apples, scab on some leaves and mold attacks on just over half of the shoots. The flower buds grow predominantly on the autumn shoots. The color of the flower in the balloon phase is yellowish. Flowering is early. The flowers are medium in size with overlapping petals. The variety is triploid and has the following self-sterility alleles 9/21/1.

The quality and season of the apple

The apple season is late, it is ripe from November / December. Ribstone is harvested medium / late (first half of October) / medium early (last half of September). The apple has an average attractive exterior. The pulp is very juicy / dry with weak / high sweetness, medium acidity and much or no aroma. The apple has a moderate tendency to impact damage. The taste of Ribston is generally considered good. The apple has a long shelf life.

The exterior of the apple

The apple is medium sized with a length of 58mm and a diameter of 68mm, measured at the widest point. The shape is flat / flat-round and slightly asymmetrical. The basic color of the apple is a pale yellow. The cover color is orange. The cover color covers approx. 50% of the apple. The apple cover is smooth with faint streaks / faint but clear streaks. The surface of the shell is oily. The color of lenticels is brown relative to the base color and brown relative to the cover color. All the rings around the lens cells look bright compared to the base color. The shaft is long and medium thick, approx. 13 mm long and approx. 2.4 mm thick. The stem pit is medium deep, with a lot of rust. The cup cavity is flat / medium, and the cup is medium and closed / semi-open. There are no or very weak ribs around the cup.

The inside of the apple

When the apple is cut from flower to stem, you can see the following signs: the vascular tube is conical or cup-shaped and dust threads are located in the center of the cup. The green lines around the core house end in the middle of the channel. The core diameter is approx. 22 mm. The core makes up about 0.32 of the diameter of the whole apple. The kernels are medium-sized and brown. The shell is thick. The pulp has a golden color. The meat is soft / medium strong with a medium fine / fine texture. The meat has a strong tendency to brown after cutting.
